One quart of wood protectant i used this one how to gel stain over a painted exterior door.
This thicker wiping stain or a similar gel stain is key for this project.
Start by using a brush on all the recessed areas and then use a roller on the flat surfaces.
Add a small amount of stain to the garage door as a color test.

Most neutral colors would work great for this but if you ve got a bright or bold garage door color you may consider painting it neutral before adding the gel stain.

The first coat is generally the thickest so do not be afraid to overdo it.

With a damp rag clean front doors and allow to dry.
Allow 24 to 48 hours for the stain to dry completely.

Part of the process of staining a garage door to look like wood is using brush strokes to allow the base color to come through just a little to give it that woodgrain look.
Remove door hardware and apply painter s tape where needed optional.
You can then create a woodgrain finish with your brush using a striƩ technique.
The hubster used a cheap synthetic brush and worked one section at a time brushing on the gel stain in the direction of the pattern in the door.
Open up your gel stain can and stir it well for 1 minute or so.

Once satisfied add the gel stain to the paint tray and begin staining.
